Pakistani Cricketers on Trial in UK

Inside a British courtroom, Salman Butt and Mohammed Asif faced some harsh words from the prosecution. They were made out to be villains of the highest order, for they aren’t men who plotted against their enemies, but instead are men who allegedly acted against people they worked with and called friends, including the entire sport they represented.
There is no doubting that the two Pakistani cricketers were caught in a very dirty and allegedly blatant illegal scandal. The world has seen the video and read the news report by the now-defunct tabloid News of the World — and the evidence is quite damning. But of course, a UK court and 12-member jury will be the ones to make the final judgment on their guilt or innocence.
Still, in the trial that began today at Southwark Crown Court over an alleged betting scam from August 2010 that involved the cricketers, a third teammate, 19-year-old fast bowler Mohammad Amir, and sports agent Mazhar Majeed, Butt and Asif maintain that they are not guilty to two charges of conspiracy: conspiracy to obtain and accept corrupt payments, and conspiracy to cheat at gambling. Both charges carry maximum sentences of seven years and two years in prison respectively.
If the men are found guilty, holding them accountable and humiliating them will probably not stop the “rampant corruption at the heart of international cricket” that Prosecutor Aftab Jafferjee, QC, talked about. Yes, the guilty must be held accountable and harsh penalties need to be handed down, but dissuading players from being tempted by easy money with jail sentences is only part of the solution.
Gambling in international cricket is big business. Hundreds of millions of dollars can be bet on single matches. And just like the game itself, the networks involved in the fraud-filled gambling are international too. Mumbai, Karachi, Dubai and London are connected via what Jafferjee called “influential but shadowy” bookies. They are unlikely to easily give up the obscene amounts of money they bring in.
Making an example of the Pakistani cricketers and Majeed will, in the big scheme of things, do very little to rid cricket of corruption. Sure, it’s a start. But everyone involved in this trial are small fish in a very large pond – and it’s a pond in which large inequalities and oversights remain.
Does the ICC have the resolve (and desire) to truly work with governments and law-enforcement agencies around the world to crack down on illegal gambling syndicates, or even reform the system when so much lucrative, untracked money is changing hands? Moreover, how do you stop corruption in countries where the government and police are just as corrupt as the people you are chasing?

Online Travel Writing Course

Matador U’s online travel writing course. The course is a 12-week program that consists of 12 separate modules, although you can take as long as you’d like to finish the course because the course offers ‘lifetime access’ to Matador U content, forums and market blog.

Price and Course Structure

With a $350 price tag, What you liked about the course was how practical it was. It wasn’t only about the craft of writing, but also about pitching editors, participating in press trips, targeting your market, getting published and actually making a career out of travel writing. One of the module assignments was to create a budget and figure out how much you’d need to make from travel writing in order to sustain the lifestyle you’d like to have. Each module has interesting example texts and helpful links that I’ve gone back to for reference.

Content and Benefits

After completing Matador U, you also bought the Lonely Planet Guide to Travel Writing by Don George. Much of the content of this $15 book is similar to what was covered in Matador U. If Matador U was only content, the Lonely Planet book would be a much better deal, but you’d say that it wasn’t really the content that set Matador U apart and made it more of a catalyst for you, but the extracurricular tools. Meeting other travel writers and bloggers in the forums and taking advantage of leads via the market blog have instrumental in advancing your writing career.
Now there are support groups and live help available, weekly writing labs and a frequently updated market blog, often with exclusive leads made available only to Matador U students.
The writing lab wasn’t offered weekly, and during your entire time as a student, you are only able to submit one article due to the infrequency of the labs. Now students can submit articles for constructive feedback from Matador’s editorial team on a weekly basis. This is one of the best benefits of the course, because you can submit any article you’re working on, whether it’s a course assignment or not, and get detailed constructive feedback from editors and your classmates.

Market Blog Writing Opportunities

After the course finished, you’d have to pay a subscription.
Thankfully for all Matador U students and alumni, the market blog is now one of the lifetime access points of the program. It’s curated by Julie Schwietert, Matador U’s head faculty, and you’d say it’s updated at least five times a week. There are TONS of leads and you’ve seen dozens of special offers to U students for press trips, one-time gigs or long-term assignments.

Conclusion

The best part about Matador U has been the people. Many of the faculty and students have become friends. you can even been able to connect with a few in person, and you hope to meet up with more in the future.
If you’re considering signing up for Matador U’s travel writing or travel photography programs, I’d definitely recommend doing it!

City Secret – WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Turowicz

A Polish hero who defended Lahore in 1965 war. The Pioneer of SUPARCO. Rocket Missile Man of Pakistan. A Polish who chose Karachi as his eternal abode. Here is a toast to WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Turowicz. Here is a toast to Karachi’s diversity. Spare sometime and say hello to him. He rests in peace at Gora Qabrustan.

Air Commodore WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Józef Marian Turowicz, (April 23, 1908 – November 8, 1980) usually referred to as Air Cdre. W. J. M. Turowicz, was a prominent and noted Polish Pakistani military scientist and anaeronautical engineer. He is considered as one of the chief architects of the Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan's space program. Turowicz, an eminent rocket scientist and an aeronautical engineer, was the leading and central figure in Pakistan's drive to develop high-tech rocket and missile technology of its own.
WÅ‚adysÅ‚aw Turowicz came to Pakistan in 1948 after Pakistan High Commission in London announced vacancies for technicians and pilots in Pakistan Airforce. He along with a group of 30 other Poles were posted at Drigh Road Base in Karachi. Zofia, his wife, taught Mathematics at the Karachi American School and also trained gliding to Air Cadets in Karachi and Rawalpindi. She later taught at Karachi University as well. In 1961 the couple obtained Pakistani citi¬zenship. During the 1965 war, Turowicz rose to prominence when he defended Lahore as a pilot. He also ensured supply chain of local spareparts for Airforce after the supplies stopped from abroad. After his retirement from Airforce in 1967, he joined SUPARCO where he worked till 1970. He was chosen by famous nobel laureate Dr. Abdus Salam to lead Pakistan to the excellence in rocket and space technology. He was instrumental in launching first Pakistani Satellite and acheiving breakthroughs in rocket and missile program.
His wife and daughters stayed back in Pakistan. Two of his daughters married Pakistanis and the third married a Bangladeshi. Władysław Turowicz passed away in 1980 and was buried in the Gora Qabrustan. PAF Museum Karachi has placed a memorial plaque in his honor. He was awarded Tamgha-e-Pakistan, Sitara-e-Pakistan and Sitara-e-Quaid-e-Azam (Well before these honors were found in cereal packs)

Shahabz Shareef v/s Dengue?

Apparently, Shahabz Shareef- Khadim-e-Punjab, has been fighting against the killer mosquito by visiting  hospitals specified for Dengue patients personally and by arranging seminars etc. However, one should not forget that "We need actions, more than words". Sub-standard anti-dengue sprays including spraying used mobil oil in the dengue affected areas, price hike and shortage of common medicines like "Panadol" and mosquito repellent lotions/sprays define the failure of Punjab government in combating the deadly virus.  It is also a point to be noticed that releasing orders only is not enough, CM is also responsible to keep a check on all the authorities for whether or not, the imposed policies are followed. The fixed rated for CBC test reports are PKR 90. However, government hospitals are still charging the patients with heavy fees that ranges from Rs 250-500 in some cases. I personally paid a visit to"Ghurki hospital", by reading a Punjab govt ad in newspaper , and was disappointed to find out that, the mentioned hospital is charging patients with Rs 250/- instead of Rs 90/- Complaining on toll free number 080099000 also could not make any noticeable good. This is just one hospital, I am sure that the other labs must be doing the same.
A senior official said that past occurrence indicated that dengue would spread every alternate year, and because it hit Punjab, particularly Lahore in 2010, it was expected to recur in 2012.
Contradictory to CM's announcements Ittefaq Hospital is also taking the full benefit from the situation.
The unexpected outbreak of dengue this year suggested that the virus is growing stronger and proper research should be carried out to seek ways to eradicate it, said Mayo Hospital and King Edward Medical University Microbiology Diagnostic and Research Lab Infection Control Officer Dr Tayyba Ijaz.
“It has become an endemic now. We need to have a disease-tracking system along with an early-warning system. We have no virus culture lab, which is why we can’t make a vaccine for it,” she added.
All advertisements regarding the prevention of dengue being published on behalf of the Punjab government currently are completely misleading, said a senior doctor requesting anonymity. They allege that all public health institutions are equipped with complete diagnostic and treatment facilities, which is completely untrue, he added.

Pakistan has become a state having no power, no electricity/gas and inflation of consumables. Not only Punjab government, but Mr. President needs to be thrown away! Off to the the official records, Pakistan will be one of the richest state if all of its wealth from MPA's is brought in the banks of Pakistan. Lets talk only about Khadime Punjab. According to Daily Dawn CM is the richest member of Punjab Assembly with the assets of Rs 489.64 millions in the country and abroad. He has four properties in UK worth Rs 175.6 million. He and his wife own agricultural, non agricultural lands, land cruiser and has shown investments in sugar, paper, dairy, textile mills and poultry farms etc.Just a food for thought that if he really is a "Khadime Punjab" then why not he feels like spending some of his private money for the sake of his people? Plus, is there any scale to judge that from where he has gathered so much of money?Of course by corruption!
"There are eight investigations and two inquiries pending with the NAB regarding alleged corruption and misuse of authority mainly involving Mian Nawaz Sharif and in one case against his younger brother Shahbaz Sharif." Source: CoulmnPk
